Korea: Version Me.0

Thursday, November 18, 2010

Hmmm...so it's November I noticed...

hehehe, kinda let this die, didn't I? Well I knew it would happen. The longer you go without posting the harder it is to start again 'cause you just think of all the things you need to write about and get discouraged. Meh. So perhaps i'll just skip all that and just talk about the now.

Sooo it's November, tomorrow marks the three month mark of being in Korea...on the one hand it seems like it's been a lot longer, on the other like it's been not long at all. Though lately I'm feeling like it's been a lot longer and 3 months sounds way too short. >.> Anyway, things have really settled in now....except that I'm still making my lesson plans for the week sunday night *cough* err...but I have a MUCH better idea now about what works and what doesn't.

This week, part of my lesson involves explaining school in America to the students. They're all ABSOLUTELY amazed when I say that school is from 8AM - 3PM and that there's no school on saturday. Every time there is cries of jealousy. And it gets louder when I add that there aren't any school uniforms in school (except for private school). Another thing I find interesting is when I ask them at first what they know about school in America, almost every time...if not every time they mention School buses. Huh...Somehow/somewhere they know about school buses, but not that there isn't school on saturday or that there aren't school uniforms usually...interesting.

In other news, I've started watching the drama "Baker King Kim Tak Gu"....and by started i mean i'm currently on episode 25/30. And it's awesome...I finally know why everyone was freaking out about it when we first got here XD
Kay that was a random tidbit. I think i'll end this random post for now, and read Harry Potter 7, which I checked out from the tiny English Library at my school ;D Unfortunately HP7 doesn't come out here til a month after it does in the US. Actually I guess it's probably already out in the US isn't it? Dec. 16th here D;
Oh well, more time to actually read the book I guess.

OH but first I wanted to mention that today is the day in Korea where all the high school seniors take their super scary, only once a year, college entrance exams. Everything else in the country seems to start later because of all the crazy traffic from this test...or so I've heard. I do know that my school started an hour later than usual for no reason other than it was college SAT day. My co-teacher also told me that today no airplanes will fly anywhere because the sound from the airplane might disturb the listening portion of the test. O__O If that's not serious, I dunno what is.

One of my other co-teacher's daughter is taking the test today. Apparently she was very nervous last night, I DON'T BLAME HER! I guess they have to get to their test location by...8-something, and the test starts at 8:40AM, which is not very unusual to us Americans who have SAT's, BUT. But. In Korea, the test is over around 6PM!!! :O What is this crazyness? D; No wonder people freak out over this stuff. And it's only ONCE a year, so you only get ONE chance really...though theoretically you can take it again next year, but I don't think that's really a comforting thought because you'd already have graduated high school by then.

So yeah...scary. O__O But I do like coming to work an hour later X3

Kay, now for Harry Potter ;D

PS: I've started trying to do this Project 365 business, which is where you try to upload a picture you take every day for a year. So far...I've got 4....but. knowing myself...I DO tend to let things die....lolol, like this blog...
Anyway, worth a shot right?

School Festival Day~

We had our school festival today!! It was a lot of fun~ ...but i'm too lazy to write about it now, but i felt bad about not posting anything for a while, so I'm gonna post two videos from the performances at the festival. I think these are my favorite performances ;D

BTW, school festivals are awesome~!

1. Second year boy dances Shinee's "Lucifer" dance solo. HE GOT SO MANY CHEERS FROM STUDENTS -AND- TEACHERS hahaha. He was clearly a favorite. I never knew he was such a dancer though. Apparently he put on a great solo dance last semester too...I can't wait til next semester XD
Lucifer

2. Five second year boys, introduced as the "F5" (lol) dance DBSK's "Mirotic" These are the "cool" kids among the second year boys, or some of them anyway. In Korea, this also means they're the smart kids haha, so I know these boys a little better, since they can actually talk to me. They also get interviewed by the MC, another student, at the end haha.
Mini-DBSK

Tomorrow is Sports Day! Super excited ;D
I'll make REAL posts...eventually. I have a lot of pictures/videos!

Yeah ;D

Lol, and i kept thinking while watching it "Waa~ Junho, look how important you are now!"

But yeah...if you want to see futuristic....construction workers...or something...
Military futurism....coal miners in the future...ON INVISIBLE TREADMILLS.... i dunno LOL

2PM - I'll Be Back

Anyway, as a whole, their new album is AWESOME. X3 Must buy it when it comes out...and after i find a music store in cheongju ;D

Trip to Chungju for the Martial Arts Festival: but...it was raining. -___- Still, we saw some cool things :D Went with Epik teachers

School trip to Daejeon Science Museum: Went with classes 5 and 6 from the first grade. Putting the pics of my students from that trip into the "students" folder instead of here ;D

Random pics of school/Cheongju: Including Teachers' Sports Day haha. After the first day of midterms, all the teachers got together to eat, drink, and play kickball XD Fun times.

Korean student vs. American student (a few points)

Hmmm....so i wrote this yesterday during my extra class but didn't post it...I think i was gonna add more, but i'm lazy lol. So this was in real-time when i wrote it yesterday!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

wow, so i gave my kids free study time for the second hour of my extra class, and guess what....they're ACTUALLY studying...it's amazing. They're silent except for some quiet talking, but i can hear them, and they're totally talking about some math problems. I mean, I knew that the kids here were different than at home, but i'm still surprised at times.... They're just such good kids for the most part o____o

Another example: I have to cross a crosswalk to get to school in the morning and it's one of the only crosswalks i've ever seen in korea that has a button to push when you want to cross the street. So I was walking up towards it one morning, and I could see that it was currently letting people cross, so i was a bit irked that I missed the crossing by only that much, but there was a group of my boy students who were crossing as i was walking up, and they looked back and saw me approaching the crosswalk, so they pushed the button for me as they got to the other side :D How nice!! I could tell because when the button has been pushed, they light up on both sides of the street. Anyway that just made my morning and i wasn't mad about missing the light anymore lol. I just feel like that's something that would never happen in America :P

Also my students are always giving me food/candy. One time this girl gave me a Chupa Chup lollipop and another time this girl gave me a full on chestnut. XD It was still hot when she gave it to me. And there was another time when I was waiting at the bus stop by my school to go downtown. This was on a Saturday and the saturday school had just got out, so the area was swarming with my students >.< I didn't realize that was the worst possible time to try to bus anywhere (all the schools were getting out, the bus was PACKED). Anyway, I was at the stop and some of my boy students also came to wait for busses. They'd bought crackers at the mart and one of them offered me one. But it's not just that they offer it to you, it was the way they offer things that makes it so nice. Cause in Korea you give things to people higher ranking than you (age, job, school year, etc) with two hands and it's very respectful and all that. So i'm always just extra touched when they offer me things X3

Plus they're always saying hi and bowing to teachers....actually they're really supposed to say "hi" to teachers, so many times i see a kid running by either being really late or in some kind of pain and he's always yelling out "annyeonghasaeyo-annyeonghasaeyo-annyeonghasaeyo!!" as he's going by a few teachers lol. It's pretty much second nature to them.

I dunno, students in korea are just a lot more mindful and respectful I suppose. Not that the students in America are really that bad, though some are, but the ones are...in such a way that it really stands out and is noticeable.

They're just so darn cute! lol it's great. :3

Music Time!

Today I ran into Duck Boy, and he jumped right into "HiByeHiByeHiBye" Before I even knew he was there.....he's learning...

Anyway...I've decided to do a video spam of all the songs that have invaded my life since I got to Korea...most of them are songs I heard after I got here, some are songs that I'd heard before but due to hearing them a million times after arriving they really remind me of my first month-ish here.

These are in no particular order, EXCEPT FOR THE FIRST ONE because I heard this song...I think everyday for a week at least after I got here and it will forever remind me of the beginning of my stay in Korea.

MC Mong - 죽을 만큼 아파서 (Sick (?) enough to die)
Uhm....also this song is amazing. :P

FT Island - 사랑 사랑 사랑(Love Love Love)
omg, I love love love this song....and yes I partially meant to do that, but mostly I actually love love love this song. <3 Plus the video's pretty cool~ SE7EN - Better Together
catchy~

휘성 - 결혼까지 생각했어 (I even thought of marriage)
Everytime I hear this song I want to sing along XD

Taeyang - I'll Be There
Like...zombie...vampires...or something XD But I love the song....also I love taeyang.

Sistar - 가식걸
I really didn't like their first song...but this one gets stuck in my head >.< Big Bang - Beautiful Hangover
It's in Japanese....oh well~ I love this video...mysterious random moving circles haha

Supreme Team ft. 영준 - 왜 (why)
Newer addition to my constant soundtrack

SE7EN - Digital Bounce
I didn't like this song much at first, but it's really grown on me...I love when TOP comes in XD

Rainbow - A
I dunno if this is the group that's supposed to have the really really young girls in it or not, but this song is caaaatchy.

G.NA - 꺼져 줄게 잘 살아 (I'll back off so you can live)
Great song~

DJ DOC - 난이런 사람이야 (I'm a guy like this)

This song is pretty new, but already I really like it....I was iffy at first, but it got viciously stuck in my head:
Miss A - Breathe

Of course, I really reallllly liked their first song, but since I'd known about it before i came here, I'll post this version instead....which is amaaaazing. ;D
Miss A - Bad Girl Good Girl...?
I caught this on tv when it was happening. Chuseok special XD

Now that i've gone completely overboard...*cough* I'm done! :D

Aaaand 2pm is making a comeback Oct 15 X3 Soooo, that's exciting X3333 Also Big Bang is supposed to be making a return to Korea sometime soon...this month? something....in other words, this month in music = YES.

Boys' work vs. Girls' work

Random note about my creative students

So I've given the "make your own story using past tense" class to a boys class and a girls class now, and just from these two classes I see a huge difference in stories. They were allowed to make up any story they wanted lol.

Girls' stories (They had less time, so most of these are just pictures not much story writing yet):

1. A story about a girl being scolded by her mom, then badmouthing her mom to her friends, but then her mom hears and the girl grovels and then the mom like...pushes her lol.

[very cartoony.]

2. Story of everyday life: "I get up at 6:00", then a picture of missing the bus, then of sleeping in class, then of sitting in math class, then of "study hard" in the after school academy, then someone sitting at a desk still studying at 1:00.

[I love the sleeping in class picture XD]

3. A teacher laughingly telling a student to "give me crying!" Then the student giving what looks like a bowl of tears "Here you are!!" and the teacher saying "After school bring your crying" (?) Then a student sitting at a desk looking all happy and waving saying "(cute) I'm Minji" and the teacher saying "Do not act like a cute person" Then the student looks like they turned into a monster at their desk saying "I'M MINJI" and the teacher saying "Ok"

[....this story isn't finished...i have no idea where it's going XD]

4. A story about a girl (one of the ones in class i think) goes out shopping "after test..." and it says "fashion news" and "I'm happy" Then the students report card "But in the school" "띠로리" (?) Then the girl crying "I'm very sad" and then mom looking very mad with flames coming out of her head (lol) and then arms with a stick hitting them "love stick" it says.

5. A conversation between two girls: one is wearing a "I love you Kikwang" shirt and the other says "Hey!", Kikwang shirt says "why?" Other girl says "I...I have something to tell you." Then kikwang shirt thinks: "서..설마 고백??" and other girl says "Hah Hah Hah..." looking all crazy and then she says "MBLAQ" and kikwang shirt girl says "헐~" (it's revealed that other girl is wearing an "I love Mblaq" shirt XD

[LOL the last one like...is kinda creepy but cracks me up. But you gotta know two things: 1. who kikwang is and 2. Mblaq's song "Y" lololol]

I see a lot of similarities between the girls' stories. Minus the last one lololol

NOW. Boy's stories on the other hand: (they had more time, so most of them actually wrote their stories out + drew the pictures)

1. "I have many hair. Many people say you look so dirty. Cut the hair. So i think cut my hair." (the picture is a guy with a mustache and other around him saying "cut cut cut" Then: "I went to the store and I bought razor and cream." Then: "Arrive my house and I went bathroom." Then: I saw a mirror. and spred the cream on my face. I cut my hair." Then: "Oh no! I slide to sope (?) Oh no. I cut my nose. oh shit." Then: "What? Oh yeah. It's dream. w...what? Where is my nose?"

[LOL. But they didn't finish their drawings...sad. lol]

2. "민X's nick name is Kim Germany" Picture of a loner standing by the "휴지통" being pointed at and made fun of by others "김독일 ㅋㅋㅋ" Then "After school, going to home" Picture of loner walking home and people behind him throwing something at his head "shot! 팅!" Then "It's very tired 민X's life." Then: "The test result day" "Mother! I don't take a good score" "D..Do...Do you want a die?" Then: "YES!" "ok.." Then: "After all 민X tries to kill himself."

[....this story is actually pretty traumatizing O___O but also super cartoony....]

3. "In the school camp. We did the activity called rafting. First 회재 jumped into the water and everybody laughed. Then 승민 jumped into the water, but he didn't come up to the suface. Then 승민 came out and he just looked like beaver. Then laught." This one has a picture of a row boat with lots of people in it, then one jumps off and his head is floating above the water and everyone's all "ㅋㅋㅋ" then another person jumps off but then there's just "...." above the water. Then he pops out and has beaver teeth and everyone laughs...

[XDD wtf? Well they always call this one kid a beaver cause he looks like one apparently lolol. He was part of the group btw, he was helping them think up the story, so I think he embraces the nick name. XD]

4. "One day rabbit and turttle are held a race. Turttle was win. How the turttle won the race. One hour ago rabbit took a rest. at that time turttle find a rabbit and hit her head as turttle sheld and rabbit was broken head. So turttle could win the race. -The End-" This one has a turtle and rabbit racing, then a naked turtle racing, then a turtle winning, then a rabbit on the ground all beat up and a shell next to it XD It says: "One hour ago" and points out all the "blood" and the rabbit is thinking "why" also the "sheld" is pointed out XD

5. Today LSH and YSH had fight. YSH made a fight but YSH can't hit LSH, so LSH very angry and hit YSH. Finally YSH blood his nose and hide his tear and SHS teacher hit LSH's cheek. Then fight is finish. -End-" This one shows two people and one says: "Hey will you fight me?" and the other says "Okay." Then it's like: "Die!" "Bbouch!!" Then the teacher comes and says: "Hey guys follow me!" Then they say "sorry" and the teacher smacks one of them and then the one who got smacked is like "shet" and the one who got punched in the fight is all "kk"

[XD wtf...]

6. This one is the life story of one of the boys in the group: "In 1997 there was a baby whose name is 승민. When 승민 was middle school student, handsome 기태 kick and punched him. He teased many people. He passed the important exam when he was 19. He become a rich person but one year later 기태 killed him. So 기태 got all of the money." This one starts with a baby, then 승민 getting bullied by 기태 then 승민 sticking his tongue out at a crowd of unamused people, making fun of them no doubt, then him taking a test and looking really happy afterwards, then him lounging by a pool with sunglasses and a pile of money next to him (XD) then 기태 is back, shooting him by the pool with a rocket launcher (from the roof of another building) saying: "You teased many people. You should be killed by me."

[LOL This is my favorite just for that ending. CAN'T YOU SEE THE LOGIC? lol, i bullied you when you were little, then you bullied others, worked hard, and became super sucessful, so CLEARLY i must kill you now. XD wtf.]

The boys stories all seemed to involve more fighting and violence, but both had actually quite cute drawings...o___o

As for the finish the story part...(I gave 5/6 panels to a story of a girl going to get ice cream and then tripping over a dog while looking at a text message sending the ice cream flying....and the students had to finish the story) Compared to the girls' endings the boys seemed to have more just kicking the dog and/or making the dog into 보신탕 LOL...but i did see one girl's story end that way XD

It's October!

It's October 1st! Happy October! These days it's so crisp and cool out, it's amazing. I really love this weather, it always makes me feel energized when i walk around the school and just feel the cold air and see the orangey red trees outside X3 I also get distracted by how nice it looks outside when i'm in some of the classrooms on the upper floors 'cause i can see the mountains and the sunshine and just know what the weather outside feels like X3 Ah...love it.
It's 9:30am right now and walking back down to the teachers' room, the air in the lobby was so chilly, it felt like it does at night in berkeley/yuba city (in fall/winter). I felt like i could almost smell the jack-o-lanterns burning XD And the other night while walking home from the bus stop, i just felt like it was christmas time lolol, wow. I guess I associate different temperatures/weather with memories from holiday times in similar weather. But this seems to only apply to cold weather holidays...

whatevs. anyway. today's friday. the weather's nice. I wore jeans to work today for the first time and the class i just had was not bad. Therefore, i'm in a good mood lol. Not to mention, the class i'm supposed to have right now is cancelled (for me) cause they have midterms next week and my co-teacher wanted to finish teaching them the chapter, so i'm off the hook. Ah~ what a beautiful day~~ XDD

That class is the one with Duck Boy. I discovered that in this class, one student would often respond to anything even remotely funny with a loud nasally "haha" (think that bully in the simpsons whose name i can't remember right now...was it nelson?) So...i decided to dub him "Duck Boy" cause he reminded me of a duck. lulz. Anyway Duck Boy has now come up with something else he likes to do, but this isn't limited to class time, he does this in the hallways too lol. These days, my one-on-one conversations with Duck Boy go like this:

Duck Boy (usually coming out of nowhere): HI.
Me: Hi
DB: BYE
Me: Bye...
DB: HI.
Me:...HI.
DB: BYE.
Me: BYE.
DB: Hi
Me: HI. BYE. HI. BYE. HI. BYE.
DB:...HI.

And this will all happen without any real breaks in the "conversation." Also it'll take place when I'm just standing in the hall/sitting somewhere/walking to or from class/be IN class before it starts or after it ends. lol, at first i was like: ....really?? But now i think it's kinda funny and when i see him, as soon as he says the first "hi" and "bye" I whip out the "hibyehibyehibyehibye" The other kids walking around seem to get a kick out of this too.

XD I have some of the most random interactions with individual students. They're so entertaining, lolol. Some girls like to fake me out with high fives, only to "jelly fish" their hands away when i go to give them one. And I'm only starting to catch on now, wtf haha. There's also still some students who never fail to tell me they love me XD I thought it would die out, and for the most part it has (down to just hellos from everyone) but there are still those who say it XD One girl always does the heart above her head with her arms and says it. In fact, this always happens at lunch when i'm walking to the table. Pretty sure it's happened every day this week...lulz

Anyway, I don't have class again til 1:10, 3 hours from now...either i'm going to die of boredom at my desk...or i'll write another blog entry before lunch. we'll see~

Videos of my students XD

So today I just started carrying my camera around with me in the hallways and almost at the end of the day i started taking videos while walking along...I wanted to record the kinds of things I see everyday walking between classes lolol. The first video is just that, walking back to my desk after my last class, but the next two are ones i took while purposely wandering the halls with my camera XD All in all, fun times.

This was towards the end of the day though, so the students were probably more active than they would have been in the morning, but this is the best time anyway ;D
Oh, also I told them all i was taking the video for my mom...felt like that would make them more willing to talk to the camera than if i'd said: "I'm taking this video to show all my foreign friends what korean school children are like." ...but who knows, that might have worked too...

Next I'll get some pictures up that I took with some of them lol

Video 1: "Walking downstairs after class"

Video 2: "Random hallway happenings pt. 1"

Video 3: "Random hallway happenings pt. 2"

buahahahaaa, i had great fun with this, and with the pictures i took, which will come next time lolz. Some of them are just such camera lovers, girls AND boys XD

I feel so accomplished now having finally used my camera ;D NOT TO MENTION actually posting it online. wow...go me >D

Wait...vacation's over now?

Sooo...it's the last day of my week long vacation, and in all my extra time this week I've...posted nothing. XD

But it's been a relaxing week. Finally got to sleep in, cleaned my house, got some food/things for my place, blah blah blah. It was very nice. X3 And of course I hung out with any other epik teachers that were still in the area. We went up to the fortress that's in Cheongju and hiked around the mountain there, it was really nice, and the weather was beautiful. Sunny, but cool and not humid...unlike seoul where it was apparently typhooning and flooding...lol, I mean of course I'm sorry there was so much rain that some of the subways had to be shut down and cars looked like they were fording rivers and all that jazz...but really on the inside I was like:

Cause in Cheongju the sun was shining and the skies were blue...lolol

Anyway, I have pics from the hiking...in my camera...somewhere far away...
So those pics will come..later :P wow i'm so lazy... -__- Oh well! lol

So last night I went with a friend to explore some local bars in the downtown area. This, of course, is very important and necessary.

Apparently someone at the bar had a birthday, so at one point all the lights went out except for some flashing club-style lights and happy birthday music started playing...not REALLY unusual, just slightly different from the US i'd say, and the girl had a cake with candles and blew them out, etc etc.

Then this waiter comes out with a tray with a glass...stein...something with beer in it, and a shot glass with some red liquid in it. The lights are still off except for the club lights and now a strobe light @__@ Anyway, I saw this guy, the waiter, seem to chug some drink and was in the middle of commenting on it, when he suddenly BLEW HELLA FIRE at the tray in his other hand and lit the shot on fire. It was really...like a huge cloud of flame...So of course, after the initial shock I was all:

THEN he blew the shot out, plopped it in the beer glass, and topped the whole thing off with soju before handing it to this girl. And of course all of this was done without spilling a drop. Then the whole bar started chanting "one shot! one shot!" and this girl chugged the whole thing XD ...then the lights came back on and things went back to normal, but it was just...so much MORE than i would have expected for a birthday...even after a while I was still quite impressed lol

but uh...yeah. There's a story for you ;D To make things better we saw a guy on the street selling little rabbits for 500 won, or like...50 cents O__O They were verrrry cute. And then I won a toy out of a crane game machine 'cause i'm amazing. ;D

anyway...school again tomorrow...My students will either be like this:

Or they'll be like this:

Depends on their moods...first day back from vacation...who knows o___o

oh uniforms...

Some of the students started wearing their autumn uniforms today. Basically just add a navy sweater vest and tie to the summer uniforms. XD Though, the girls' skirts also seem to be a slightly different color, a darker color.

Can't wait to see them all wearing them....also can't wait to see the winter uniforms X3

Sometimes I wish I had a uniform to wear too...SOMETIMES. It's just cause i'm lazy and would like to not have to think about what i'm wearing everyday :P

PS: did i mention the tie was pink? lol

EDIT: Ok, i was wrong about the uniforms. First of all, the sweater vest is black, not navy, and it has a pink stripe around the collar, second the shirt is long sleeved and doesn't have the blue plaid trim, third the tie is pink and black and white striped and the skirt, in the girls' cases isn't blue plaid anymore, but gray plaid...probably thicker too. I don't really know about the boys pants...they seem the same, but they're probably thicker too i guess? Phew! almost had a crisis in uniform description, heaven forbid... ;D

Pictures~

I've finally started putting my pictures online....there's too many...of the same things lol, i dunno. Anyway, there's some pictures of my apartment in the album "Cheongju" and there's some pictures of my main co-teacher Miji in the album "yong dong grape festival" as well as her little brother lol.

The weekend of the grape festival I went with my co-teacher to her home town, Yong dong, where they were having the grape festival. I came back with FIVE BUNCHES of grapes....i still have one left lol, ...i hope it's still good <.<

Anyway, some pictures here...Actually it's mostly all that i've taken. I haven't really been using my camera <.< But there hasn't really been a lot to take pictures of haha.

http://smg.photobucket.com/home/Shello/index

I'm gonna try to get some more pictures of my students ;D

random facts about my school

interesting things about my school, Yong Seong Middle School:

-The bells that sound the beginning and ending of classes aren't bells, but this cute little melody lol. Also the bell at the beginning of the day and at the end of the day is "fur elise" XD I was really surprised the first time I heard the bell ring

-When you walk into the teachers' bathroom, classical music starts playing lolol. I dunno if it's the same in the students' bathrooms, but at least in the teachers' bathroom it does that. Kinda nice haha

-My school is only 2 years old, so there are only the first and second grade of middle school here right now. The first graders have green name tags, the second graders have yellow name tags...I wonder what color the third grade name tags will be next year (aka starting in ...march? the school year starts then. Right now it's the second semester of this year)

-The first floor is where the administration office, principal's office, and main teacher's office with the vice principal (the one i'm in) are. The second floor is where the first graders are, the third floor is where the second graders are and the fourth floor, is where i'm assuming the third graders will be next year.

-Whenever teachers walk around, the students going by will always bow their heads and somtimes also say "anyeonghasaeyo" usually, sometimes while running by, running up or down the stairs, in the midst of chasing another student or throwing their slippers at each other...really in all states they do this.

-When I walk by some say "anyeonghasaeyo" others say "hi" or "hello" and some just bow their heads lol. I usually say hi/hello back. Though I've started saying "good morning!" or "good afternoon!" to see what happens XD You should see their faces, they look so confused lololol. Though today one girl said "good afternoon" to me so I'm counting it as a success. ;D

-At lunch we eat off of metal trays that have different divisions on them. Usually there is rice, some kind of soup, and three other foods, maybe kimchi, veggies and some kind of meat. Chopsticks and spoons only ;D The teachers eat in the middle (homeroom teachers will eat with their classes) and on one side are the second graders and on the other the first graders. Classes get to come to lunch at different times, it rotates every week.

-Btw, teachers totally get to cut in line. We just walk in whenever we want and get in front for trays and utensils ;D All the students just say hi or talk to the teachers about random things.

-All the classrooms have sliding doors and windows...It's really like in the cartoons lolol

-Everyone wears slippers at school, no outside shoes are worn inside. The teachers have shoe cubbies on the ground floor, the students put their shoes in their lockers. Slippers...they're very comfortable really.

-My school's uniforms are: (these are the summer uniforms)
boys: gray pants, white shirt with blue plaid collars, and trim.
girls: the same color plaid skirts, and the same shirts as the boys...but for girls lol. I've also seen some girls wearing a matching plaid tie with their shirts.
Their PE uniforms are just gray shirts and shorts with either green or yellow lining depending on their grade.

-Teachers wear....pretty much whatever they want ;D

-At the start of each day, when walking onto campus, there's always a teacher and some students that stand at the gate and greet everyone walking in. These teachers and students seem to rotate every week or every few days.

-All the teachers talk to each other by "cool messenger" ...but i have yet to really figure it out/talk to or need to talk to anyone on it. The icon is a penguin lolol, COOL messenger get it? XD

-The boys and girls at my school are separated into boys and girls classes. Guess
which are better...-___- The girls are waaay better lolol, but the more advanced boys classes can be hilarious. Really, there are only a couple boys classes that i find...difficult lol. They're usually the lower level boys who are just loud and give up cause they don't understand. -___-
The girls are just easier to impress maybe lol. Some of the more active/loud girls classes always have a million questions to ask me haha XD

-One of my advanced boys first grade classes always stands together and bows to me at the end of class (normal in school i think, but they're the only class that does it for me lol) But instead of saying "bye" they say "I love you teacher!" XDDD I like the higher level classes, I can talk to them more easily. This includes humor to some extent XD

-Both boys and girls like to scream "hello teacher!!!" at me at school, but girls are more likely to do it on the street. At lunch, when I go into the "english lab" where students can check out english books, there will often be a swarm of girls who will come in and talk to me lol. Sometimes the boys will talk to me, but not much. And neither will ever talk to me when the other gender is talking to me. They really don't like to mix much lol. It's like pulling teeth trying to get them to mingle during my extra class (the only co-ed class i have)

-THEY'RE ALL SO FUNNY/CUTE/GREAT though, I get a kick out of them everyday lolol. Especially as time goes on and they get more comfortable with me. There were always the ones that would come up and talk to me enthusiastically, now that number is increasing, so that's good. ;D

That's all for now...
lol, maybe next week....orrr....next next week (cause next week is chuseok, aka korean thanksgiving, and we get every day but monday off >D) I'll bring my camera and try to interview some of the more talkative students X3 Or at least get some (more) pictures ;D

It'll happen...
I'm just so tired when i get home usually D; I just feel like laying on my bed and watching tv mindlessly lol.

But I have most of next week off for Korean thanksgiving, so I'll probably update then...course i'm planning to do a lot in that week...we'll see how much i overcome my procrastination XD

BUT I'LL DO MY BEST. ;D

lolol, i love my 2pm gifs XD

"It's getting better all the time..."

omg, so now almost done with a complete 2 weeks of class. Almost done with my first week of teaching an actual lesson from the book. Only 5 classes left tomorrow, then it’s on to a new lesson. I feel like I’ve only just gotten the hang of this one. >.< It’s gone through several changes since Monday lol. Now I have to make a new lesson D: I feel like I’m gonna be going through every week like this lol, scrambling to come up with something that works, tweaking it through the first couple days, finally falling into a rythym by mid week, polishing it on thurs (though…thurs has some difficult, aka rowdy, classes, so probably not much polish -__-) and then on Friday scrambling to think of what to do next week @__@ Each class is different, so it’s hard to really come up with lesson plans…for this weeks’ I’ve been able to make the activity easier or harder depending on: 1. how advanced the class is, and 2. how much time the first part of the lesson takes. The first half of this lesson comes directly from the book and the cd that comes with the book, so the first half is totally fine, I really like doing it actually XD THEN comes the second half where I have them play a game which involves much running around the room and in some cases a lot of yelling and pushing and shoving too lolol (boys classes mostly). Then with the last few minutes I challenge them with some tongue twisters. I like doing the first part and I like doing the tongue twisters, it’s just the activity which is a pain…lol and I thought of it in the first place. Meh. Next week I’ll try something else……..but what? Anyway, by now I’ve kind of established a rapport with some of the students lol. You know, the ones who aren’t afraid to speak up in class or come talk to me outside of class. Most of the students are pretty quiet and shy, but almost all of them will shout “HELLO” or “HI” at me while walking through the hallways. Then there are those who are a little better at speaking, who will actually try to talk with me haha. Though, to be fair there’s also those who aren’t as good and they’ll come try to talk to me in packs, so they can bounce words off each other and make a conversation that way lol. Those conversations are filled with both Korean and English, and it's funny because for the most part, I can understand their Korean, but they don't know it. So I get the whole picture and know exactly what they want to say, but just sit there and watch them try to figure out how to say it >D BTW, these group conversations are almost always girls.....maybe even always girls.

But the individual students who talk to me are the best XD In one class there are two girls who are always together, they told me their names on the first day of class, and then EVERY DAY find me in the hall or in extra time and ask me what their names are lolol, so I know their names very well, but they're always impressed when i remember. I wonder how long this will last. Some of the other girls have started asking me to remember their names too, which...i hope doesn't lead to all of them asking me cause that could be impossible @__@ but so far, if they keep asking me, there's a good chance i'll have them all memorized haha.
There are a few boys that will talk to me. One boy in one of the advanced 1st grade (middle school 1st grade, my school has 1st and 2nd grades) asked me if people played "call of duty" in america. XD I told him, yes of course.

BUT the student that stands out MOST, the one who never fails to let his presence be known is Mr. Kim Yuna. lol. The first class i had with him in it, he introduced himself to me as kim yuna, then the next day he called himself michael jordan -__- His real name, which i finally know after days of just referring to him as kim yuna is kwang jin. That kid is loud. And he's in an advanced class, so he has a lot to say lol. He's always very quick to answer too. Some of the things he says all the time are: "Oh, no no.." or "Oh, of course." and a whole collection of other random things XD Plus he's in my extra English Conversation class, so i get to see him twice a week....yay.....lol, but he's really entertaining XD I wish more students would be like him actually, not afraid to just talk. It makes my job much easier anyway.

In any case, i'm getting more comfortable doing the lessons, so that's good. I've started a class journal, so I can remember which class is which. So far, most of the notes are like: "girls, small class, basic, active." or "boys class, big class, advanced, like games" Knowing which class i'm going to helps me think about how i'm going to do the lesson, whether i have to make it easier or harder. Now my only problem is coming up with more lesson plans D;

More later...including PICTURES, cause I finally got my alien registration card, so I should be able to use internet at hoooooommmeeee yay!

PS: I didn't think i'd write this much just now lol. I was planning on writing a short blurb XD

OMG I WANT INTERNET AT HOME D;

Who knows when i'll get it....eventually...one day....I need my alien registration card first and that will take...time -___-

I can only go online at school, so it's been real touch and go. I promise i'll actually write things when i get internet at home. I have a lot to say lol, my students are so....funny haha, and cute lolol, I feel like when i finally get internet i'll have too much to say, so i'll just summarize...i suppose that's ok.

Super hot. Super rainy. 24 classes a week. a million billion students. I can't walk down the hall without some of them waving and saying "hiii~" or "Helloo~" at me XD Sometimes i get some professions of love from the boys lol. Some students are pretty good at english...others....really not. There's such a wide range.

My school is only 2 years old, so they only have two grades, the first two of middle school. I'm the first native english teacher here, so everyone seems unsure what to do around me lol. I have 5 co-teachers and all of them are pretty great. My main co-teacher is awesome she's done so much for me. She's only two years older than me actually which is nice. Her name is Miji, Shin Miji.

I've finished my first week of class, and it's gone by pretty quickly...now i have to make up real lessons (this week was introductions) so booo. I'm worried that all the students are listening to me now because i'm new and interesting but that after, when i have real work for them to do they'll start ignoring me in class. -__-

We'll see i guess.

Anyway I'm about to go out to eat with my fellow english teachers. I think we're gonna talk about next week lessons. >.<

I'll update with PICTURES when i get internet at home D; SOMEDAY.

running running running~

hmmm....so not much updating, sorry sorry. Been busy running around to lectures and whatnot during the day and running around the streets in the evening lol. Today is the ....uh...the...5th day I've been in Korea...? I flew in thursday evening and now it's...it's...wednesday...so it's been 6 days i guess. Time...is just blurring together omg D;

Anyway, It's been awesome, not much bad jet lag which is great. Everyday I want to sleep later and I eat more lol. The first day I woke up at 5:30am (after sleeping at 1am) and could NOT go back to sleep. Today I was rudely woken up by my alarm at 7:30 and wasn't ALLOWED to go back to sleep cause I had to get going... Lectures are okay..some are better than others, but for the most part, after each one I get super excited to be off to Chungcheongbuk to meet my co-teacher and see my town and all that jazz.

errr....this is taking longer than I thought, I have to run to class again soon. This wasn't a very good update. -____- Next time I'll write something interesting, but for now, I've already typed this out, so might as well post it :P

I'm HERE

Yup. Finally Here. Have moved my trillion pound luggage into my room (thank god this place had an elevator, unlike the ihouse at Yonsei D;) and have met a few people who're going to Chungbuk like me, including my roommate, who's birthday was/is today, so we all went out drinking XDDD

Somehow..this always happens in korea lol. EXCEPT the dorms we're in now don't have a nifty fingerprint scanner, so curfew is at midnight...i suppose it's for the best. THIS IS ORIENTATION AFTER ALL HOHOHO~

yeah...

Anyway, that's all for now. It's been a long day. When i woke up this morning i was in California, and now i'm sitting here in Seoul. fun times XD

Err...not sure what this is actually XD

update of sorts

Korean Visa + One way ticket to Korea + new camera + headache.

T-minus 25 days til takeoff.

...now i just need to pack D;

Tuesday, July 20, 2010

Kay, official first post.

So, I just spent an unreasonable amount of time fixing this blog up the way i want it...but i'll probably change my mind once i actually GET to Korea...yes. that's right, it's all a lie. Though my profile SAYS I'm in Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea, I'm actually still sitting in Yuba City, CA...US of A.

Whatever. There's not really going to be anything to write about 'til I get there, so why not just leave it? Or is there? Fortunately for anyone who may be reading this, I've already gone through most of the awful process known as "applying to EPIK" and have been confirmed as a teacher for Chungcheongbuk. All I need to do now is get my visa (which i can do after I physically have my contract in hand...which should be tomorrow...hopefully) buy my plane ticket, and PACK. Packing...I am not looking forward to this. First of all, i'll be living in Korea for a year soo...how do you pack for a year? Secondly, I can only pack as much as the airline allows...no more than 70lbs? 50? It'll be a nightmare in either case.

So yeah. I guess that's all for now. I'll probably think of more random things to talk about later.

...Gonna try real hard to actually use this and not just let it die...though I do have a tendency to do that haha

EDIT: I realized I never said when I was going. I'm supposed to be there to meet the EPIK representative at the airport on August 19th...which is a little less than a month away :O
Fun times.

lame post is lame

Testing...testing...hello out there?
